Part of the cross awarded to Helena’s mission was taken to Rome (the other remained in Jerusalem) and, according to tradition, a large part of the remains are preserved in the Basilica of the Holy Cross in the Italian capital.

Where is the original cross on which Jesus was crucified?
The relic was discovered inside a stone chest, unearthed from the ruins of Balatlar Church, a seventh-century building in Sinop, Turkey, situated on the shores of the Black Sea.
Where is the cross of Calvary today?
Christian tradition since the fourth century has favoured a location now within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This places it well within today’s walls of Jerusalem, which surround the Old City and were rebuilt in the 16th century by the Ottoman Empire.
How many pieces of the True Cross are there?
Later, four cross particles were also microscopically examined – part of ten pieces of the true cross, accompanied by documentary proofs from Byzantine emperors. These fragments came from grand European churches: Santa Croce in Rome, Notre Dame in Paris, and the Cathedrals of Pisa and Florence.
